Tabled from December was approval of a Resolution to hold a Special Election on the matter of changing from an elected to appointed Clerk and Treasurer. Prior post on this may be read here.
MAY 8, 2018 ELECTION CALENDAR OF DATES
By Jan. 30 Petitions to place proposals on ballot filed with county and local clerks. (168.646a)
After consultation with the individuals who received the following letter concerning their requests for reasonable access to Council Meeting documents and information the following statement has been received from one of the individuals concerned.
“There are, according to the most recent Census, only 118 households and 78 families residing in the Village of Bear Lake. There are @ 210 adults of voting age with over 1/4 aged over 65. There were 118 occupied homes, 23 were listed as summer homes.
Full time residents pay @$63,000 in Property Taxes of which $68,275 have now spent in salaries and wages. 48 of us signed the petition calling for a Referendum vote on the Ordinance taking away our right to elect the Clerk andTreasurer.
It is my position that no Village resident should be forced to file a FOIA for information about our own government- regardless. Why would any government approve using our hard earned money to pay an attorney to provide an 8 page justification for not providing requested basic information? It seemed to those listening that the Council in fact was not consulted.
For the past 3 years many individuals have attempted to get basic information about the financial operations of our government – particularly after the State Department of Treasury issued a stern warning.
Previously, when we have tried to nominate Bear Lake News as our representative to save duplication of communication this has been denied.
We are grateful that to just do what has been asked, file a standard 6 month FOIA for each Meeting Packet in advance of each meeting, has been done by Bear Lake News.
With so many documented instances of delay or official non response, several individuals did indeed seek legal advice. As we realized the bill would impact Village finances, no action was taken. It is regrettable that the Village can’t just tell us all what you are doing and respond in kind?
When complaints are made that ‘these people’ are costing ‘us’ money – who’s money is that?
‘These people’ live, work and support our local community.”
At 8.36 am we received the following: no supporting documents.
