Farewell “Bear Lake’s Largest Variety Store”…..

Today the crew arrived to begin preparation for the removal of the Variety Store. The contract for removal was awarded to Pitsch Industries of Grand Rapids Michigan.

For many long time Village residents this is a bittersweet moment. Though the building is now an environmental and public health hazard many still remember it as the O’Rourke building and as the place to watch movies projected on the side on warm summer nights.

How we got to this is a long, complicated and sad story. How we remember the Variety Store doesn’t have to be.
