In an effort to promote and recognize high quality, innovative planning efforts in northwest Lower Michigan, projects were selected for the Northwest Michigan Regional Planning Awards in preparation for the statewide planning awards program offered by the Michigan Association of Planning. Award nominations for each category were accepted from individuals and local governments, and were reviewed by
the Planner’s Review and Advisory Committee, an advisory board to the Council of Governments.
Regional Planning award recipients demonstrate initiative, originality, innovation, effectiveness, quality, and leadership in planning for our communities.
Outstanding Leadership Award to Bernard Ware of Pleasonton Township in Manistee County.
On February 25, Bear Lake, Onekama, Cleon Township, Village of East Lake, US Coast Guard Manistee, Manistee County Dive Team, Manistee K-9 Unit, Manistee County Sheriff and Under Sheriff, County Snowmobile Patrol, Wexford County Dive Team, Missaukee County Dive Team, West Shore Hospital EMS, City of Manistee all spent the day on Bear Lake practicing for an event they hope never happens.
Recently there have been several tragedies involving good people who were caught by unpredictable ice conditions on area lakes. As Spring approaches, what can look like good snow and ice cover can hide a tragedy waiting to happen.
Braving frigid waters and biting wind, Fire, EMS and First Responders systematically practiced safety procedures for retrieving victims who fall through the ice on inland lakes.
